From Missing Puppies to Stolen Trucks: A Recap of Recent Chase RCMP Activity

Media Release - Chase RCMP Detachment

MISSING PUPPY

On January 6, 2024, Chase RCMP were advised of a stolen dog. The caller reported that her 7-month-old puppy was missing from her back yard. The dog was wearing a halter, attached to a chain. The chain was still there but the dog and halter were gone. The caller was worried the puppy had been stolen. A short time later Police were advised that the puppy had been located nearby, enjoying his new-found freedom. There was nothing to indicate the puppy had been stolen. It seems more likely this was an escape attempt.

VEHICLE SHOT

On January 6, Chase RCMP were dispatched to Paquette Road in Chase, for a report that a parked vehicle had been shot. Police attended and observed the vehicle had several broken windows and damage consistent with having been shot with a pellet gun or small caliber firearm. No reports of gun shots had been received in the area and no shell casing were located. Police were told the vehicle’s owner has felt targeted by local vigilantes and suspected this to be further harassment. Police were unable to determine exactly when the damage occurred. Nothing was captured on video surveillance in the area. Patrols on Paquette Road will be increased.

ASSAULT

On January 6 at approximately 5:15 pm, Chase RCMP received a report of an assault at a business in Scotch Creek. The victim, a customer, reported being assaulted and threatened by two other customers after a disagreement over music that was being played on the facility speakers. Police attended and determined the offence appeared to be racially motivated. Police will be recommending charges.

ASSIST AMBULANCE

On January 7, Chase RCMP were requested to assist BC Ambulance in Scotch Creek. Paramedics had been called for an elderly family member who appeared to be suffering a sudden decline in his health. His symptoms included confusion and aggression toward family and paramedics. It was apparent he required treatment at hospital as his symptoms could no longer be safely managed at home. Police were requested to ride in the ambulance with the patient to ensure the safety of paramedics during transport to Kamloops. A family member assisted Police and Paramedics in keeping the male as calm and comfortable as possible until arrival at hospital.

STOLEN TRUCK/THREATS TO POLICE

On January 6, Chase RCMP received a report of a stolen truck. The caller reported his white 2020 GMC pickup was stolen from his residence at Adams Lake. He suspected an acquaintance was responsible because she left behind laundry in his washing machine.

The following day she returned, still in the stolen vehicle. He called Police but during the call the phone transferred to the truck’s Bluetooth, alerting her that Police were coming. Chase RCMP received information that the female was acting erratically and had threatened to kill Police. She was believed to be in possession of an imitation firearm. Police attempted to stop the vehicle at the Adams Lake Ferry but she fled from Police. Further attempts to stop her failed due to lack of Police resources – Chase RCMP did not have enough Police vehicles to block the road both in front and behind her. A logging truck driver understood what was required and completely blocked the road near Anglemont. Additional Police resources arrived from Salmon Arm and Kamloops and a spike belt was deployed. The female collided with a Police vehicle during her attempts to escape but was safely taken into custody after a short pursuit. No one was injured this incident. A passerby located an imitation firearm lying on the road nearby and handed it over to Police. Police expect to recommend multiple charges.

BREAK AND ENTER

On January 8 at 12:06 am, Chase RCMP were advised of a break and enter to a seasonal residence on Leopold Road, Scotch Creek. The complainant had an alarm system and live video surveillance which showed a man inside her house. Police attended and found that the male had already departed, likely scared off by the alarm. Nothing appeared to be missing or disturbed however a window was broken. It appeared the male broke the window to enter the house using a chunk of wood he found in the firewood pile. Police have obtained a copy of the video surveillance and expect to forward the matter to Crown for charge approval.

ACCIDENTAL BURNS

On January 8 at 5:26 am, Chase RCMP were advised of a possible assault at a residence on Shuswap Avenue in Chase. The caller could hear two people arguing. A second caller indicated that a person had been burned. Police, Chase Fire Department and Ambulance all attended. One male was treated by paramedics for burns to his abdomen. He was not cooperative with Police or Paramedics and wouldn’t explain what happened. A witness advised that the man spilled lighter fluid on himself and then accidentally lit himself on fire while lighting a cigarette.

THEFT OF BILLIARD BALL

On January 14, Chase RCMP were notified of a theft at a commercial establishment in Sorrento. The owner reported that on January 4, a patron at the establishment pocketed a valuable billiard ball. The theft was captured on video surveillance. The video surveillance was circulated on social media and a suspect was identified. Unfortunately, this business has had ongoing problems with décor going missing during business hours. The owners have been very understanding when items are subsequently returned with earnest apologies. In this case, the item has not been returned and Police expect to therefore recommend charges of theft.

CHECK WELLBEING

On January 15, Chase RCMP were requested to check the well-being of an elderly family member who hadn’t been heard from in weeks. She wasn’t answering phone calls or coming to the door. Police went to her house and knocked on the door but it was locked. Becoming increasingly concerned, family members authorized Police to force entry into the home. It was found to be completely empty. Just then an acquaintance arrived and informed Police that the elderly female was out of town for the past three weeks. It seems she failed to notify family of her travel plans.
